What is Mindfulness?

As we enter a new year there are lots of great intentions for self-improvement and self-care, and we will hear the word ‘mindfulness’ even more so in 2019.

When we look at ways to understand the term mindfulness, the following definitions can be found online:

‘The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something’

‘A mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.’

With these definitions in mind, there is absolutely no doubt that we could all benefit from being more mindful in our everyday lives. A keyword to consider when thinking about this form of therapy is compassion, it’s essential that we form a sense of compassion for ourselves, in addition to others.

Being in touch with our thoughts and feelings, and accepting them for what they are, promises long term improvements in happiness and overall health. It’s also something we often overlook when our lives become busy, when in fact the practice of mindfulness can support with managing some of the strains we may experience.

It’s important to understand that we all have the ability and capacity to be mindful, and some of us already embody it in our everyday lives, potentially without even realising it. Mindfulness is a way of living and a lifestyle practice which can be learned.

Mindfulness is about taking some time to be present, coming away from living in autopilot and really developing an awareness of self and your surroundings.

Want to live a more mindful life? Meditation is a great form of practising mindfulness. We have a variety of meditations which will support with developing your mental state and spiritual awareness.

Meditation on twin hearts is one of the most effective and efficient meditations for personal healing and spiritual upliftment. It stands out as a powerful method for inner peace and illumination and can be experienced here for free at MCKS Pranic Healing London. Held every Saturday from 11am to 12pm at the Sadhu Vaswani Centre.
